What is 3D Printing?

3D printing can be accomplished in a few different ways. But, essentially it’s taking a digital object and using a machine to build it in the real world. At Flowerstone we use a process called Fused deposition modeling. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a method of depositing filaments of thermoplastics based on a pattern using a melt extrusion method. To put it simply this method of 3D printing is like a really complicated mechanical glue gun that slowly builds an object in fine layers based on a digitally 3D-designed model.

What kind of materials do you use?

We use a few different materials based on the needs of the print. Mainly we use a substance called PLA which is a biodegradable plastic filament that comes in a wide range of colors and strengths. We can also print projects in other materials including ABS, PETG & Carbon Fibre Nylon. During our initial consultation, we will determine what the best material is for your ideas to succeed.

How long does it take to print an object?

Printing times can vary greatly depending on the materials and how complex the item is to print. More complex and larger items can sometimes take multiple days to print and even longer to put together once their pieces have been printed.
